The guided visit of the château
What the guide adds, and what the château already gives you
I want to be even-handed here, because this is the decision visitors get wrong most often. The château runs its own guided visits, daily, about an hour, included in the entrance ticket, no booking needed. They are good. So a paid guide is not buying you access to a story you could not otherwise hear — it is buying you three specific things.
A fixed time. The included visits run to the château’s schedule, which may not fit a train. A booked guide runs to yours. A small group. Ten people means you can ask a question without raising your voice; the included visits can be considerably larger in July. Your language on demand. The included visits are principally in French, and this one is offered in French or English. If none of those three matter to you, take the free one and spend the difference on lunch — I say the same on the guided-or-not page.

Arrive early enough to buy the entrance ticket before the guide's start time, not after. This is the single most common stumble on this booking: the meeting point is outside the gate, and the ticket desk has its own small queue in summer.
